FRIM Adventure!

To those who didn't make it to our FRIM outing, here's what you've missed!

The trip to FRIM, Kepong organized by PEERS was a blast for the 31-odd participants, which was held on July 5th, 2009. The air fresh, the greenery lush, and we were geared for adventure. It kicked off with a short briefing by our guide Pak Jalali on FRIM's history and the trek we were about to embark. We saw the four huge Arapaimas, lazily swimmng in their ponds, the marbleized tree stump, the tall whispering trees with their myriad of names, history and applications.

We saw the Tongkat Ali, Malaysia's infamous aphrodisiac plant, the posh Cengal tree, the Keruing tree with its aromatic chemicals for perfumes, the Gajah Bersimpuh tree - simply named for its elephant-like look, Kulim tree with its distinct garlicky smell - yes, you can cook with the fruit, the Jari Hantu tree, which was used by women in family planning, and not to mention the sight of majestic Kapur trees towering into the sky.

Then we proceeded up the side of the hill to get to the next attraction offered by FRIM, the Canopy Walkway. The climb up was a challenge, with everyone huffing and puffing all the way. The walkway is constructed with ladders and planks, and stood about 30m off the ground. You would think people were playing tricks on you by roughly shaking the walkway, but really, it was just the WIND! Definitely not for those who have acrophobia. Fear not though, for safety precautions are in placed and dutifully adhered. The whole of Kuala Lumpur could be sighted from the vantage point high up in the trees. If we were quiet enough, we might have the chance of bumping into some of our furry friends there.

After all the sweating and calorie burning, we had a scrumptious potluck-style picnic beside Sungai Kroh. Some took the opportunity to cool themselves under the gushing waterfalls while the rest enjoyed lunch. One of the guys caught a tiny terrapin in the stream, which was released back into the water after the group took photos of it.

Special thanks to Encik Emry and the participants, who so generously spent their rest day to support PEERS activities. Thank you for making the trip a memorable one with your sporty and cheerful spirits.

All in all, it was a walk to remember, and such activities will be continued by PEERS. Watch out for our announcements!
